Quick Update

Summer is here to stay.

The main story line of the week follows Swimming Lessons 2016. All three girls are in this year, and it has been an education. The first day was AWFUL. Not for Alaina and Joya; those two are champs. They are in Level 3 and Level 2 respectively, and they are doing great. But then there's Bria. We'll probably say that about her for most of her life. She's a Tiny Tuna, which is a class of just 3 year olds. The first day was bat-poo insane. I blame myself; I should have taken them all swimming once or twice before lessons started so that Bria wasn't out of her mind excited about being in the pool, which then triggered Not Listening and Not Staying With Her Teacher. I literally witnessed the beginning stages of how a kid can almost drown with no outward signs. She had gotten to a place where the water was just above her waist, and she put her face in the water and then just didn't bring it out. She started moving, with her face down, toward deeper water. The teachers were all around her, but dealing with other kids. I yelled, then ran to the pool and yanked her up. It scared the daylights out of me, but thankfully not her. Tuesday was remarkably better, as she heard a constant lecture for the rest of the day about staying on the wall and listening to her teacher. And by Thursday I felt like I didn't have to watch her every single second.

That's life around here. One more week of swimming lessons, then I imagine we'll enter into the Great Mourning of 2016 as Bria copes with the fact that lessons are over.

Peace out, friends.

Quick 5

Holy 90+ degree days, Batman!

1. Is it just me, or are the cottonwood trees hulking out this year? Every day we have a blizzard of fuzzies in the backyard. The girls love it. They think it's magical. Lee hates it. All our grilled food comes with a cottonwood fuzz crust that I'm sure Gordon Ramsey would call "horrid." I just don't remember it ever being this epic before.
2. We had a fun time celebrating Lee's birthday. He started the celebration by camping overnight with a couple of his buddies. Then we celebrated as a family by grilling kebabs and eating birthday brownies. I recommend having preschoolers if you need someone to follow you around saying "It's your birthday!" every ten minutes on your birthday, just in case you forgot.

3. The days are hot, but we've found ways to cope. I think the girls will look back on the Summer of 2016 and think about all popsicles and sprinklers, all the time. I'm good with that.

4.  We start swim lessons on Monday. Bria woke up at 4:00 this morning and told me she needed to "frow up." I asked why, and she said she was "so excited for swimming." It's going to be a long weekend.

5. Someone left a big treehouse/dollhouse thing in the Free to a Good Home section of the nursery on Sunday. I snagged it, and it has brought great joy to the girls all week. But they might be done with it already. So I'll just take it back. Maybe I should have a Toy Swap section of the nursery, where people can bring toys and take toys, just to change things up. What do you think? Does that sound like a good idea, or just a logistical nightmare?

Happy Summer!

Quick 5

Another two weeks of summer fun in the books.

1. The Super Summer Challenge is going well. Or at least okay. The girls like earning the money and spending the money, although there is much more money to be earned each day, if only they had the gumption. Alaina likes buying a can of pop to have with lunch. Joya likes having her nails painted (are you so surprised?)
2. Alaina's birthday was filled with fun. It started out with a special birthday breakfast of Toaster Strudels. That is a real treat around here. A real treat for me and Lee, that is. Alaina was barely impressed, which just baffled her parents. Have we gone wrong with this child?
3. Then we all went to one of my favorite childhood places, Adventure Golf up in Westminster. Grammy's work was having a staff appreciation there and we were all invited. Gramma and Grampa Kimble came into town and met us there. along with Aunt Jamie and Naomi, Oliver and Ellie, Grandad and a surprise visit by Apple Ben. We ate lunch, we had cake (to celebrate both Alaina and Naomi), we golfed, we had ice cream, we played on the bumper cars. It was an extreme fun day.
4. Having Gramma and Grampa here was non-stop fun. We took them to our favorite river to throw rocks. It was warm and beautiful.

5. We went to our church family hike on Saturday. It was at an amazing state park called Castlewood Canyon. It was so pretty. But I took exactly ZERO pictures. Alaina hiked with her BFF, Lee and Joya went a long way, and Gramma, Grampa and I followed Bria on a shorter, but kind of intense climb. It'll have to just be a memory. We came home and everyone took naps. Then we got out the sprinkler and let the girls have fun.
We loved having Gramma and Grampa here.

And now we all need naps. On to celebrating Lee's birthday!

Happy 8th Birthday, Alaina!!

I always knew this day would come. The day when all traces of your early years disappeared, and your life started to be marked by what you can do, rather than what you can't. You are 8 today, and you are the coolest 8 year old I know. You really rocked 2nd grade, doing well in the school part and the friend part. You catch on so quickly to every new thing we teach you to do. Cleaning bathrooms, doing dishes, watering plants, reading to your sisters...you are such a big help to me. Your sisters love you and missed you so much while you were at school. We're all so glad to have you home for the summer.

I pray that you fully understand that you were made in God's image, and that He has plan to prosper you, and not harm you. I pray that you will delight yourself in the Lord, because if you do, He has promised to give you the desires of your heart. I pray you will always trust the Lord to provide for your needs. I pray you will grow in goodness, compassion, brotherly kindness and love toward everyone you meet.

I really like who you are turning out to be.

We love you!

Love,
Mom, Dad, Joya & Bria
